47th Heineken Roeivierkamp: Race Report

Not your typical regatta
A collection of the Marin Master’s Men headed to Amsterdam for a wild race on the Amstel river in the 47th annual Heineken Roeivierkamp (AKA H4K) March 9-10! This Heineken sponsored FISA official regatta traditionally marks the opening of the Dutch rowing season. The H4K is not your traditional 2K sprint or 6K head race but rather a cross between the two, here is the challenge:
Master Crews row three event distances: 250 meters, 2500 meters and 5000 meters. On Saturday you race the 2,500m and then row directly to the start line to race in the 250m sprint. These times will then dictate the starting order for Sunday’s 5K. On Sunday they flip the seeding order so the highest bow numbers start first. Meaning the faster boats start last creating a chaotic course where boats are constantly being passed. The overall ranking is calculated by converting all times to 250 meter times, i.e. the 2500 meter time by ten and the 5000 meter time by twenty. The sum of these forms the final score.
This year, the crews faced quite the conditions and unfortunately racing was cancelled Saturday and moved to Sunday (scrapping the 5K altogether.) The Marin men (see line up below) braved the conditions and placed 14 of 18 in their category and 71 of 95 overall.
